Instagram Is Not Dead. You're Just Using It Wrong.
Every few months, someone writes a post saying 'Instagram is dead.'
And every few months, Instagram proves them wrong.
The platform has over 2 billion monthly active users. Australians are among the most active in the world. Small businesses across the country are getting real, paying clients directly from their profiles.
Instagram isn't dead. But if it's not working for you, something needs to change.
Why it feels like it's not working
I've had hundreds of conversations with small business owners who feel like Instagram is a waste of time. Almost every time, it comes down to one of these:
Posting content that looks nice but doesn't say anything
No clear call to action
Only doing one type of content (usually product shots)
Not using Reels, which is where most organic reach lives right now
A bio that doesn't tell people what to do next
None of these are fatal. They're all fixable.
What's actually working in 2026
Here's what I'm seeing work right now for small business owners in Australia:
Talking-to-camera Reels. Genuine, unpolished, just you sharing something useful or real. These build trust faster than anything else.
Educational carousels. '5 things I wish I knew before starting my business.' Saves and shares go through the roof.
Client results and case studies. Specific numbers, real names, actual stories. This is what converts browsers into buyers.
Stories with a purpose. Polls, links, behind-the-scenes. Low effort, high engagement from your warmest audience.
You don't need a huge following
One of my clients, Courtney (@onefinedaisy), went from Instagram being 30% of her leads to over 52% in just three months. Not because she got thousands of new followers. Because she started using the platform properly.
Another client, Amity from Nestwise, grew from 225 to over 1,000 followers and had a Reel hit 150,000 views. She's a small business owner in a pretty niche space.
Instagram works when you work it right.
